I am 42 years old and an eight-year breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed in 1997 at 33 years old with no family history. My treatment consisted of a lumpectomy, then a left mastectomy and six months of chemo. My mammogram was negative but my physician wanted to follow up “just to be sure”. I thank God that Dr. Christine Mason did this. I believe to this day that she saved my Life. Young women should always make sure all bases are covered when it comes to their health and the possibility of cancer.
I took part in the first “Changing Gears” ride in California last Oct. It was a life-altering experience to say the least. This group of women bonded immediately and became lifetime friends. I was honored by this group of women who chose me to lead the ride and that they gave me my motorcycle (biker) nickname of “Fearless” as in “Fearless leader”.
Shortly after getting back from the Ride. A friend and co-worker at Hospice of Michigan ( Grand Rapids office) was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her name is Vicki Poleni and she is 36 years old. We are all proud of Vicki and the way she has handled her “journey” through the surgeries, chemotherapy, and losing her hair. She is truly a “Survivor”. I will be riding in her honor this year.
There are going to be three motorcycles rides this year. The United Kingdom (Aug. 20-27), the U.S.-California (Sept. 24- Oct. 1), and Australia (Oct. 23-30). A Global Run! I will be the only rider this year to attempt all three rides. The only way I can do this is with the generous support of family, friends, co-workers, and the people of my city and state-Grand Rapids, MI.
“A young breast cancer survivor riding a motorcycle in three rides, in three months, on three different continents!!! I am honored and proud to take part in this adventure!!!
