Events in 2008
The Trust adopts a range of methods for supporting UK women’s participation in peer support adventures.
Overseas Adventures
Most of Amazon Heart’s global peer support event programme is organised and delivered by Amazon Heart Foundation (USA) and/or Amazon Heart Foundation Australia Ltd. Amazon Heart Trust UK has no role in the delivery of these events, which are commissioned by overseas charities. However the Trust does receive the proceeds of UK women’s participation in overseas events so that their hard work can benefit both the establishment of similar events in the UK and support UK charities and likeminded organisations.
In 2008, one UK woman, Wendy Peek is participating in Amazon Heart Thunder USA. The sponsorship she raises will be donated to the Trust and in relation to this ride the Trust have undertaken to make a gift of 50% of the proceeds to Breast Cancer Care, a partner charity that Wendy chose as of particular relevance to her.
UK Based Adventures
In past years the Trust has promoted UK events by establishing relationships with existing charities better placed to take on large work programmes and seeking to embed the concept of "peer support adventures" into their service provision strategy. This partner charity, in conjunction with Amazon Heart Foundation (USA), then organised and delivered the event; whilst the Trust took a minor role, offering support to the women who take on the challenge; both in preparation for the challenge, and welcoming them to the growing UK Amazon Heart community.
In 2008 the Trust are arranging a grand gathering of past and future adventurers for peer-support weekend in the Cotswolds - Amazon Heart Thunder UK 2008.
As well as raising funds and awareness, this gathering is intended to reinforce the growing peer support community of Amazon Heart women in the UK and to be a chance for us to mark the passing of the three inspirational women - sisters from previous rides - that we've lost over the past years: Jane, Dee and Sal.
The Trust was set up to empower UK women diagnosed with breast cancer - allowing them to have a say in the development of the work of Amazon Heart in the UK. As the first event orchestrated by the Trust this Cotswold gathering will be organised very much on these principles and participants will be required to play a full and active part making this a successful and positive experience. Participants should expect to join in the date-to-day organisation and volunteers will be sought to take on additional duties such as arranging collection licences for our stopping points, contacting local media and co-ordinating publicity, and heading up the Amazon Heart Motorcycle Club, under whose auspices the ride-outs will be run.
