I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2002, underwent two surgeries including a mastectomy followed by chemotherapy and radiation. Surviving these ordeals including the social prejudices and discrimination has strengthened me emotionally, mentally, spiritually and even physically. My life took a different twist after I joined the dynamic team of breast cancer survivors of Breast Cancer Welfare Association (BCWA). Currently I am a member of the executive committee of BCWA and I lead the sports and recreation subcommittee.
BCWA organizes numerous supportive care and peer support activities for women with breast cancer throughout each year. Upon seeing the performance of a dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors from Australia in 2004, I was inspired to form a similar team in Malaysia. My greatest achievement has been the setting up in 2005, and constant motivation for "Pink Challengers", Malaysia’s first dragon boat team of breast cancer survivors under BCWA.
But yet more exhilarating to experience is the Amazon Heart Thunder Adventure in Australia which I anticipate will be an exciting and challenging experience for me. I look forward to learning how this project is managed and implemented so that I can organize similar outdoor benefit finding activities for breast cancer survivors in Malaysia. Thanks to Amazon Heart Thunder in Australia and Breast Cancer Welfare Association in Malaysia for making this happen!
I realize that exciting opportunities such as these open doors for women living with breast cancer. Many of these activities are ones that we would never have thought of doing otherwise. I simply look forward to meeting all the adventurers at Amazon Heart and hope to gain a lot more from all of you.
