In July of 2004 I signed up for a motorcycle ride which promised to be the "Adventure Of A Lifetime" It was to promote peer support for young breast cancer survivors as well as raise funds for peer support programs geared towards the needs of younger women living with breast cancer. Three years and 4 "Adventures of a lifetime" later I once again will be participating in this event which has become so near and dear to my heart.
It has been four years now since my own breast cancer diagnosis at age 41. It was with the first Changing Gears ride that I actually began to move on and understand my "new" normal. It was also on that ride I felt for the first time in a long time that I wasn't alone. Opportunities such as this are so important for young women living with this disease as their needs are so very different and more often than not are overlooked and unmet. Meeting young women diagnosed with this disease and showing them that they haven't been dealt a death sentence has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Many of these women have also taught me a thing or to about how to live it up!!
I've since become a volunteer on the board of Directors of the Amazon Heart Foundation here in the United States, We've just received 501 (c) 3 status making us an entity of our own!!
This coming September is different as I will be riding in tribute of two very dear friends I have recently lost. Laurie Graham and Janet "J.J" Downes. I will be riding on Laurie's beloved Softail Deluxe which she has entrusted to me.
I am riding in memory of two beautiful souls who left us much too early. For them I am determined to make this ride a success.
I am asking you to help me out once again to meet my fund raising goal.
All monies raised will go to The Amazon Heart Foundation helping to fund their peer support adventures and programs as well as the peer support efforts of other organizations dedicated to young women with breast cancer such as the The Young Survival Coalition
Spread the word, this really beats walking!!
Thanks so much!!
Stacy
