My name is Sharon Mills. I am 48 years old and am a Breast Cancer survivor. I was born in Wollongong. I now live in the Western port area with my partner of twenty-one years. I am a Mother of two adult boys and a Grandmother of one.
My life has had its ups and downs – just like most people. I nursed my mother after she had a massive brain hemorrhage. My nana was also unwell for a long time and unfortunately passed away after a long fight. I was very close to her and it took me a while to get over her death and begin my life again.
In 2003, I discovered a lump in my right breast. I was scared and went through the normal procedures – such as a mammogram and ultrasound. The doctor was sure it was only a cyst but after an operation and the longest week in my life, the results showed cancer . A week after I had another operation and two more lumps were found as well as infected lymph nodes. I endured six months of chemotherapy and six weeks of daily radiation.
So I was a good looker! No hair to be seen, feeling average but battling on.
I developed clots on my lungs, but was lucky to get through that. To top it off, I got a rare blood disease that nearly took my life. Hospitals became my best friend! However, I pushed through against all odds to survive. I am grateful for my second chance at life and realise that unfortunately some people are not as lucky as me!
I am now an active member of Dan Hog and Ladies of Harley Motorcycle Clubs. I take pleasure in riding my Harley – competing in regular rides – and enjoying life to the full thanks to a second chance at life!
Taking part in the 2006 Amazon heart thunder ride from Sydney to Brisbane has given me the opportunity to share my experiences with other women, as well as to help raise awareness of how this devastating disease alters the lives of so many women (and men!) around the world.
After last years ride, I am really looking forward to meeting all the new riders soon! (as well as catching up with some of the olds ones!)
