The Krieter Family Riding Together -
Lizz, Rhonda and Karl |
'Que sera, sera' - What ever will be, will be! Was an adage my mother Karin, often quoted and I used to think that I did live by this. However it took a bit of a journey for me to realise that saying it and living it were two different things......
My name is Rhonda, and my relationship with breast cancer began when I was 17. When my Mum told me that this was her diagnosis, and what did I think? Surgery and treatment - radical and alternative, extended her life for ten more years.
Twenty one years later at 38 years of age, and despite that fact that I had tried not to think about it, I found my own lump. My own project to manage. My husband Karl and I told our 8 year old daughter Elizabeth, that Mummy had cancer. But that it was going to be OK, because it wasn't the 'killing kind' and things had changed a lot since Karin had died.
Family, friends, treatment and the Universe saw me through the next five years and life was business as usual.
A family sea change moved us to Scarborough, Qld and through Dragons Abreast Australia (dragon boat paddling) I found a network of friends, support, activity and awareness that I didn't know existed. And I didn't know I needed.
It was through DAA that I heard about Amazon Heart Thunder, and was inspired to get off the back of my husband's bike and get my own bike license. With my families encouragement I have and now I am doing this last AHT ride in Australia, with this group of amazing women.
Of course the ride is just the vehicle to carry the breast cancer awareness message and raise funds to support the cause, so that all of our daughters don't have to worry about WHEN they get cancer, or even IF they'll get cancer...... like my daughter does now.
So like they say.... Please give generously, and support the cause!
Thanks a lot, and BE WELL!
Rhonda
