To my mother, who has lovingly provided support, time, energy, and prayers. I ride in honor of her devotion and love.
2001 was an awful year for many of us. For me, there was something else. Fit, fine and 35, I was maddened by a mysterious drop in my energy and my mood, affected by some hidden force. Then, as 2002 started my dear sister-in-law Abha discovered a DCIS. Concerned with her news – I did a breast self exam and found a lump.
Today, it’s four years later and I’ve been twice through the wringer of chemotherapy , radiation, and surgeries. This time around, however, I’m going to live a little larger. This time, I’m going to head to California to ride a motorcycle down a curvy highway with the wind in my face. I want to do this to feel strong, to feel good, and to feel free.
Just this May, I finished chemo to again beat back the bone metastasis. I’ve found new strength in the spirit, in my friendships, and in my faith. My cancer diagnosis was and still is an interruption in my family’s life and routine -- but a ride like this is outside of routine. I think I’ll get on that bike, sit back, and chill. Take it one moment at a time. Take it one turn at a time.
Strength, Freedom and Peace will be attained. Good things will come.
