Changing Gears Australia 2005
New Rider

Driving a Harley Davidson from Sydney to Brisbane is such an exciting adventure to look forward to. After having breast cancer I want to move forward and not look back. I don’t want dwell on how terrible things could be but rather I want to revel in what I’ve gained and experience life even more and make sure I have fun with the people I choose to be with. This will be fun and what an extraordinary group it will be.

Of course I haven’t actually ridden a Harley before. My only experience has been on a 125cc motorbike around someone’s paddock. My kids rolled around the kitchen laughing when I told them I had been accepted to do the ride and now there is some growing awe, envy and even a little respect as we all talk about what it might be like. The only thing I’m really fearful about is how will my roommates on the ride deal with my snoring?

I would just like a go at stopping this dreadful breast cancer in its tracks. 1 in 11 women getting it is just too many. Doing ladies’ lunches to raise money or being in support discussion groups isn’t me. Riding a Harley is.

Who am I? After a mastectomy, chemo, being bald, and radiation in 2004, I’m a bit different to who I was. And I’m still not sure about who I want to be when I grow up! It’s been fun working it out though. I’ve got a Civil Engineering degree, did an MBA at Harvard and now I’m really into pyschology and executive coaching.

I have a wonderful family of my husband Greg, Jack, 14, Anna 12, Florence 9 and Lillian 2. In Brisbane we have a huge extended family which is why we live here although we’ve lived in the UK and the US and love to travel. Within 3km of where we live, we have 4 grandparents, 8 cousins and 12 aunts and uncles so we are blessed with company, support and love. Dealing with breast cancer showed me how to accept help and to acknowledge what wonderful friends and family I have when they all stepped in around us.

Yes, I’m doing lots of projects which I promised myself and everyone else I wouldn’t. It will always be me though and I love it. Right now, I’m working for Social Ventures Australia who provide mentoring support and funds to social entrepreneurs to help in the growth of their ventures.

Tomorrow I fly to Sydney from Brisbane for SVA. This route is one I’ve taken many many times. By car, by train and mostly by air. The road changes all the time. However, I’ve NEVER done it on a Harley. So, I can’t wait to start the adventure.
