Hi - I am Jo from Brisbane.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer when I was 37.  Obviously this came as a big shock.  I had no history of breast cancer in my family, or among family and friends.  I had a mastectomy and 22 lymph nodes removed – 18 of which were positive.  I had a TRAM reconstruction 2 years after diagnosis.

It is now nine and a half years later.  I am fit, healthy and very happy.  I have met many women over the last nine years, mainly through my involvement with Dragons Abreast Australia and Amazon Heart.

I was lucky to have participated in the inaugural Amazon Heart event – Changing Gears 2004.  For me, this experience brought about confidence and the understanding of how important peer support is for women traveling the breast cancer road.   I also participated in the Amazon Heart Odyssey 2007 India adventure, building a cottage for orphaned and abandoned babies.   It was quite different to a motorcycle event but really special all the same.

I could not resist the idea of participating in this years Thunder in Australia.  I understand too well the need for peer support and raising awareness to other women.  I cherish the life long friendships that I have made through Amazon Heart.

In May 2009 I will celebrate 10 years survival. What better way to celebrate than with 40 women from across the world on Amazon Heart Thunder 2009.
