My name is Gail Kamei and I am a Cancer survivor. My introduction to Breast Cancer began in June of 2005. This was the shock of my life. My family and friends were in a disbelief mode when I was first diagnosed. I was, by far, the healthiest and most physically fit among my family and friends. I was an avid body-builder and exercise six days a week. I ate a healthy low fat diet. Clearly, I never expected to get breast cancer. With my health regime, no one could tell me that I was anything but invincible.
Chemo’s middle name should be The Humbler. My doctor and I chose the six-treatment- with-three-weeks-in-between regime. I now say that I used to be tough.
The killer part of chemo was walking into the room where the procedure would occur. Sitting down, extending the arm that was to be the roadway for the chemicals to be pumped into my body and knowing that it would make very sick and weak, emotionally I felt like dying.
I am thankful to be a survivor, to have my health back. I am grateful to my family and friends for their love and support. I am also grateful to my Cañada College family. If it were not for the nurturing of family and friends, I am not certain that I would have survived my Cancer ordeal.
