This picture was taken by my husband outside the island home of Roy Harrison and his family who, learning of my cause, instantly became my first sponsors !

Both my sister and sister-in law having been diagnosed with breast cancer, you can imagine that I kept myself strictly monitored with regular checks and mammograms. So, it was astonishing, if not ironic, that in November 2005 I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

For me, it certainly was a “silent cancer”, its only symptom being a very occasional, mild pain at the left hand side of my abdomen. The thought it could be appendicitis took me to see my doctor.

Our family have been involved with motorbikes and the Isle of Man TT Races for many years. This year is extra special as it is the Centenary meeting. A record number of race goers are expected and our house will be filled with biker friends from as far away as Canada.

I have been riding motorcycles for 10+ years now. My children were almost teenagers when I first learnt to ride and would cringe at my offer to meet them from school on the bike. Picturing me sitting in wait astride my motorbike while other mums were sat poised in their Peugeot’s or whatever filled them with horror, that is, until one of the kids at school thought it cool.

You know, there’s that ‘T’ shirt that says “live to ride, ride to live.”
Me too !
