June 29, 2003 I received the diagnosis of breast cancer, initially diagnosed as ductal carcinoma in situ. Wrong. An unsuccessful lumpectomy followed; then a mastectomy and chemotherapy. I was 49.

Five+ years later I acknowledge I’m one of the “lucky” ones. During treatment, I met several young women, in their 20s and 30s, whose symptoms had been brushed off by doctors: too young. By the time their cancer was diagnosed, it had advanced rapidly. I can’t imagine the fear, isolation and life altering changes for these women. It is in their honor that I joined the Amazon Heart Thunder motorcycle adventure.

In the U.S., one in seven women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lives. In 1975, those odds were one in eleven. Even with all of the advances in early detection and treatment, clearly we’re headed in the wrong direction statistic-wise.

Your donation to support my participation in Amazon Heart Thunder will help these young women access the support they need. On their behalf, thank you for your generosity!

P.S. The mud photo’s from a trip down the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. Life IS an adventure!
