I was a pre-menopausal 39 with a five-year old daughter at time of diagnosis. I had surgery on Halloween 2001 to remove a tumor in my right breast. Invasive ductal carcinoma that had spread to just one of my lymph nodes under my arm but that node was even bigger than the original tumor. Six rounds of AC, seven weeks of radiation and now tamoxifen.

I was a single mother and my daughter Becca was five-years old at the time. I had been a radio, tv, print and documentary film journalist for years and had lived and worked in the US, Asia, Europe and Africa. But after my daughter was born, I thought I'd had enough wild adventures abroad so I returned to my home town of Chicago to work as a reporter and "Morning Edition" host of WBEZ, Chicago's National Public Radio affiliate.

I absolutely loved being a reporter but needed to crank up my earning potential and started working in public relations and corporate communications. I have to admit that I really slowed down during my year of treatment and found myself wondering if I was spending my eight hours at the workplace really doing something I loved and that was important. The answer was no and boy was I bummed out!!!

Then a dear friend of mine sent me a job posting that blew me out of the water: Director of Communications and Media Relations for Y-ME National Breast Cancer Organization. The job is an incredible match of my professional and personal experiences. I work every day with reporters and the public trying to get the word out that, through Y-ME, no one has to face breast cancer alone.
