Yanks Invade Australia

They made it!!!! Seven Americans (Karen, Jen, Stacy, Cathy, Rhonda, Linda and Jean) landed in Sydney at 6am after a long journey from the US. They all met up at LAX from around the country – Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Indiana and three from California.

Meredith and I met them at the airport, along with returning rider Marie and Karen’s friend Kitty who both live in Sydney. It was an exciting morning as this was the first time to Australia for all seven, and the first time outside the US for four.

Apparently there was a bit of excitement on the flight. Just as everyone was settling down to sleep, an emergency announcement came on the PA warning everyone to take their seats and grab their oxygen masks!!! Thankfully it was a false alarm, but the anxiety stirred up by 20 minutes of the alarm made it impossible for most to get any sleep.

We loaded up our support van with 7 of us, and Marie filled her SUV with the rest. Fortunately everyone did a good job of packing light and we got all of the luggage in. We brought them to Coogee, dropped the luggage at the hotel and headed across the street to the beach!

Marie took charge and served up an amazing Australian BBQ breakfast – eggs, bacon, sausages, fresh fruit, pastries, and lots and lots of champagne!

The weather was being a bit difficult. It was raining as we left the airport, but was dry and starting to clear as we enjoyed our breakfast and catching up with old friends.

Meredith and I drove into Sydney to check out possible photo stops for later in the week, while the others enjoyed the hotel, the beach, the shopping, and struggled to stay awake.

The adventure has begun, even though the official ride briefing and start of the final leg of the 2005 Global Run is not for another 3 days!!
