What is Changing Gears

"Changing Gears" is a high-profile advocacy, community-building and fundraising event created for and by young women living with breast cancer.

The purpose of this powerful motorcycle ride is to raise awareness of the unique needs of young women living with breast cancer, challenge media stereotypes and raise funds for breast cancer causes.

In addition, our riders continue along their personal path of growth and healing by building a supportive community with their fellow survivors while having a fantastic time. It's the Adventure of a Lifetime!

In 2004 twenty young breast cancer survivors challenged themselves to a 1,000 mile ride to raise funds and understanding of the disease they battled. Along the way they made a big dent in the way people with the disease were treated and supported, especially younger women. This year teams of young survivors from the UK, US and Australia will take on a global ride across all three continents to take their message even further.

Before Changing gears UK Leg 2005 I felt there was something missing in my life, something I did not understand. I had had an illness, something I never thought I would go through in my late thirties, the illness was breast cancer, I thought my life was over with, then I read about these amazing strong amazon warriors and I knew what I had to do to be a part of what they representented and hoped to achieve, to raise awareness, to support, offer advice and guidance, even in the darkest hour, I knew I had someone who I could turn too and they were my Amazon Sisters, who had been through what I was going through.
The whole Changing Gears experience has been one of friendship, sharing, confiding, feeling a new sense of belonging, knowing I am not on my own and that feeling itself is priceless!! Being in a position to combine the things I love already like riding a motorcycle was an added bonus to the Changing Gears Event, to raise awareness to the specific needs of young women and to highlight the hardships they go through, left an inpact, a solidaritory comraderie that no two people are the same yet a longing to feel secure in your own environment. Meeting other survivors and sufferers had brought me almost full circle to diagnosis and somewhere in the future I hope I can offer the same guidance and support I received.
