Day One - Sydney to Newcastle
A perfect start to the Australian Ride. Brilliant sunshine all day, but not to hot. Awesome riding. We had a great start to the day when we parked our bikes on the pedestrian plaza at Coogee Beach (we had permission!). There were lots of people. Friends and family, and also people just wandering by, interested in what we are doing, happy to make a donation.
Baker’s Delight donated breakfast, and sent their mascot – Bread Head – to entertain the kids.
Finally – we were on our way!! It wasn’t long before we were out of Sydney and winding along beautiful back roads – the old Pacific Highway. Everyone seem to really enjoy the ride.
We stopped at the Mt. White Road Warrior’s Café, a famous biker stop where we were treated to complimentary coffee and discounted sodas. The local HOG chapter joined us there for the afternoon’s ride.
Our next stop was in Warner’s Bay. The HOG chapter escorted us up onto the grass in a park where we were greeted by BCNA representatives, Baker’s Delight snacks, and local breast cancer survivors. It was awesome, right on a beautiful lake full of sailboats. The Broadmeadow HOG Chapter presented us with a donation check for BCNA - for A$1,030!!!!! Thank you!!!
From there, we rode on into Newcastle and found our accommodation for the night - a very nice youth hostel walking distance from the beach and the river. Some people managed a swim, while others met up at the riverside bar.
We all had dinner together at Finnegan’s pub. Not the best food ever, but free with our youth hostel stay. It was a good chance to all be together and to share stories and adventures from the day.

Well, we are finally on the way!!! We left Coogee this morning. Tooheys Abreast are the best group! Lead by Sydney Donna Handley who is a great small group leader. The roads were great and it was great to be on the “official ride”. What better country to be in!! Being together because of a common cause is awesome and I do feel privileged to be here. To all my friends and family – a big Hi, I am having a great time. The general public response on our stops has been wonderful and everyone is so supportive. Speak to all again soon. Suzanna
Today was the kick off day (as seen above). After a long but festive farewell, we headed out of Sydney for the famous biker road, Mt White. I love this ride. It’s fun and freeing and totally exhilarating. We will have fun AND make it home safe. A special thank you to Terry who taught me to ride out of the love in her heart. I am getting kudos all around, thanks to you.

Sweeping curves, mountain speeds, Mt. Warrior Café. Absolute bliss. Finally I’m hooked on riding. We’ve had some upsets along the way with Cindy losing her keys and the van drivers losing their way and all of us working out the press logistics of local parks. Hard to stick to “Bossy Aussie’s” limit of 2 drinks per night. What a beautiful day.

Jennifer D. Thank YOU for trusting me to "teach" you. I wish all my students had as much natural talent handling a bike as you do. I'm as happy as can be that it has all come together for you and are able to relish the ride. Keep the Shiney Side up and Ride Safe.HUGS Terry A. Don't forget to ask about "lefts" or "rights" feeling better... :)
Newcastle..isn't that where they make that yummy beer??? Although, stick to the 2 drink max reccomendation or you may get the wrath of "Bossy Aussie" (HAHA) Here's a story..last night I was walking out of a restaurant when I heard "I Will Survive", basically the theme song from the US ride. I begain to scream and dance and sing every word. All the LA snobby people were watching me and looking at me funny. However, I was back "there". Back to my incredible place which is now embedded in my memories. I also thought of all of you ladies. Where you might be at now. Physically, mentally, and emotionally. Which ladies have nicknames yet, who has specially bonded with who. Don't waste time ladies. Become "one" ASAP, because it's gonna happen no matter what so enjoy each and every minute of it!!!!! After the song was over, I begain to cry and sat down to have another glass of whine..I mean wine.
My body energy tingles with excitement, hope, jealously, and anticipation for all you women!! ROCK ON and keep the bikes on 2 wheels!!!
