Hi there. My name is Alison. I’m 42 years old and (so far) a breast cancer survivor. I live in a small town called Dorking, about 15 miles south of London. Luckily for me, the town is close to the Surrey Hills, and a major bikers’ meeting place - Box Hill. So, most of the time, I’m in seventh heaven.
This time 2004 I had just been diagnosed with breast cancer. My world felt like it fell apart instantly. However, with amazing support from my family and friends, I got through the awful treatment and still managed to smile quite a lot – even when my hair fell out!
I was teaching at the time when diagnosed but only on a short-term contract, so when the sick pay ran out, I was left in a really difficult position financially. That’s one side effect of cancer that I never bargained for! And, again thanks to family and friends who bailed me out financially, I managed to keep my house and survive on my benefits.
During my treatment, I didn’t feel able to ride my bike, my beloved bright red Suzuki Bandit 600. It sat in my garage for nearly 9 months, gathering rust! Now however, its back out and I’m more than makeing up for lost time as I've packed in teaching and set up in business with my sister running two branches of Girlsbike2 selling biking gear that women want to wear. I'm also a trustee of Amazon Heart Trust UK.
