Amazon Heart Foundation Australia Ltd

Amazon Heart Foundation Australia Ltd was founded in February 2008 to further develop and expand Amazon Heart’s peer support programs for Australian women diagnosed with breast cancer.

Amazon Heart has grown to be a global peer support movement since inception.  Amazon Heart Trusts and Foundations have now been incorporated as tax-exempt charities in the United Kingdom and the United States.  Each individual Foundation is incorporated and operates independently of the other countries, managing funds raised, adventures and participants from their own country.  The individual Foundations collaborate on global projects.

Amazon Heart Foundation Australia Ltd fulfills the same role as the UK and US organizations in this country.  It manages Amazon Heart activities, adventures, participants and partnerships within Australia.

Our aims and objectives

  1. To provide psychosocial support for women diagnosed with breast cancer and their families through peer support programs and other initiatives;
  2. To raise awareness of breast cancer issues, particularly among young women;

How we work

The Trust is run for and by women living with breast cancer. It springs from the international network that is Amazon Heart and, although separate in constitution and operation from the US and UK organisations, works within and supports Amazon Heart’s key values:

Community
is the most powerful agent of social change. The impact of one multiplied by many makes all things possible. Communities empower individuals to change their own lives for the better, and to reach their full potential by engaging with and supporting others.
Empowerment
gives people access to the skills and resources necessary to achieve their dreams. We encourage and inspire people to address their individual concerns and move towards making a difference for others.
Social Impact
is our reason for existing. We address unmet social needs and provide the catalyst for sustainable, systemic change by empowering others.
Living Life Fully
by following our passions at work and in life. Life is not a rehearsal. We advocate making the most of every day and finding balance, joy and fun in all we do.
Humanism
is treating everyone with respect and honouring the individual gifts they bring to the world. We believe in diversity, equity, unity and inclusion.

Board Members

All members of our Board are breast cancer survivors, and have participated in at least one Amazon Heart adventure.  Three committee members have extensive experience in breast cancer projects with other organizations including Dragons Abreast Australia, Cancer Council Queensland, Breast Cancer Network Australia, Young Survival Coalition (USA), Y-ME Breast Cancer Organisation (USA), National Breast Cancer Coalition (USA), Wesley Choices program and Young Action on Breast Cancer.
