I am a 57 year old from Tottenham, a town of 342 people in Central N.S.W. For the last 20 years I have worked for the Education Department teaching children to play musical instruments as well as playing the organ in my church and being involved in several of our town's committees. I have 2 children, 2 stepchildren and 5 grandchildren.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, 12 months after my husband was diagnosed with bowel cancer. I had radical surgery but chose not to have chemotherapy as my lymph nodes were clear. I knew my life would never be the same again after this diagnosis but little did I know just how my life would change. I joined a Dragons Abreast Group where my daughter lives and through Dragonboating I have met some wonderful women, laughed more than I thought possible and formed life long friendships. I was thrilled in December last year when, after a lot of hard work, Dubbo formed a Dragonboat Club and I am enjoying paddling a lot closer to home. It was also through Dragons Abreast that I heard about Amazon Heart and this expedition.
Since my cancer I have become fitter, stronger and more aware of how necessary it is to live each day to the full while appreciating the beauty of a sunset or the perfume of a flower. I hope to inspire all women to realize that a diagnosis of cancer doesn't mean you prepare to die, rather that you prepare to live, challenging yourself to overcome you fears and weaknesses in order to achieve new goals.
I am thrilled to be part of the Amazon Heart Expedition and hope that we can raise awareness of how rich and rewarding life can be after cancer.
