I was 40 when I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2000, and I was determined right from the start to keep smiling, keep positive and have a good attitude through all the treatment.
I’m an enrolled Nurse but at the time of diagnosis I had been working as Office Administration Manager for a large Table Grape growing property in the outback town of St George, south west Queensland . Life was busy, I’m involved in lots of community things and Breast Cancer just wasn’t part of the agenda. (who ever pencils that in! )I’m married and the kids at the time were 17 and 15.
Getting cancer puts a lot of things in life into perspective.
It took 2yrs for me to leave the full time office job and take up nursing again part time. I studied and achieved my medication endorsement. Started learning a martial art, something I always wanted to do. Learnt to play PoloCross, had cello lessons and art lessons.
Joining the DAA girls in Shanghai in 2004 was a fabulous experience and I came home hooked on dragonboating and keen to start up a paddling group on our Balonne river.
This was delayed because, in 2005 I was diagnosed with a rare bowel cancer, Psuedomyoxoma peritinei or PMP, its life threatening just like breast cancer so the old journey through Operations, Treatments, Tests, visits to Doctors, Surgeons, and Oncologists started all over again.
We now have a Dragon boat group, the St George River Dragons! We ran a Mini Field of women and a Flowers on the Water Ceremony and we held our first regatta last November. Our regatta was awarded Community Event of the year at the recent St George Australia Day awards .
I paddle twice a week , and regularly attend Tae-kwon-do training, hoping to gain my black belt this year.
I’m married to a fabulous man ,who is very supportive of all the things I do and get involved with, He’s even learnt to sweep our Dragonboat.!
I love people and I’m a passionate supporter of and member of the Australian Red Cross and volunteer time in service to the local branch.
I’m excited to be apart of the Amazon Heart Expedition. For a Breast Cancer survivor it is truly the start of the incredible journey, by reaching out to others, celebrating the here and now, it completes the circle of life.
