Hi. My name is Chrissy Audibert. On February 27, I will turn 32 years old. I and my Prince Charming husband, Matt, have been living with my metastatic breast cancer for over 4 years.
Sounds pretty bleak – eh? WELL, IT’S NOT!! I still push myself to my limits, be it physical, intellectual, spiritual, or charitable. Perhaps my limits have changed, but I sure haven’t!
My confidence in the above lines skyrocketed after experiencing a mystically positive, healing, life-changing journey with Amazon Heart this past summer in Montana! We, as a team of breast cancer survivors, helped build a bunk house/community center for a local Blackfeet Indian school, so that the students could learn more about their native culture and land. I am an adventurer at heart, and am thrilled to have connected with Amazon Heart, an amazing organization that “transforms the lives of women living with breast cancer through adventure events that in themselves create a wider social impact in their local communities”. How true it is! Thank you, Amazon Heart! I am ready for more!
I was initially diagnosed with breast cancer over 10 years ago, at age 20, followed by treatment in Boston, MA, and then seven years of cancer-free bliss. The cancer unfortunately returned in 2002 and spread to my brain, lungs, mediastinum, liver and bones, but I do not consider myself primarily a cancer patient. Primarily, I am a young, positive, caring, fun, adventuresome, life-loving individual who adores travel and meeting new and interesting people. Sure, getting breast cancer at such an early age, and then having it return and spread has certainly affected my life in great ways, but I am proud to be chugging along in various capacities.
I grew up with one mother, one father, one brother (two years older than me), one golden retriever, and one calico cat in the sleepy town of Harvard, MA. After attending the well-respected public school system for my entire schooling, and participating in the successful basketball and soccer teams, I spent my following four years at Williams College in the northwest corner of Massachusetts, where my breast cancer first found me in the middle of my junior year. After college graduation, a good friend of mine and I took off to Costa Rica and backpacked around the country for a month, with little itinerary, but a good handle on the Spanish language. Two other trips of note include working as a trail crew leader for the Student Conservation Association for two summers: one in Woodstock, VT and the second on St. John in the US Virgin Islands National Park. These adventures were book ended by various professional pursuits of varying interest and success.
After my breast cancer metastasized in 2002, I decided that my professional career no longer made sense for me. My most recent pursuit is reading and writing poetry – which I love! Other recent, new hobbies include playing the Djembe, an African drum; learning to paint with watercolor; and exploring my current “home” of Arlington, MA on foot when I venture out for my “exercise walks.” Of course, spending time with my wonderful husband and precious kitty cat goes without saying.
I am thrilled to explore my passion for travel, and for meeting new friends through the Amazon Heart Expedition Arizona this April! I hope to gain new knowledge and energy through my survivor teammates, through our gorgeous surroundings, through pushing myself physically, and through the Navajo tribe members whom we meet along the way. I can’t wait to meet the rest of you, our team! Go, Team AHE Arizona!
